I’m sure everyone has a particular local dish they can call their favorite. I know my favorite is Ampesi with some very well-seasoned Kobi. Seriously speaking even talking about it is making me drool! Like me everyone else has their favorite!
Every ethnic group in Ghana has some particular popular local dish that are generic to them. The following represent these groups.
GA Local Dishes
Visit any typical GA neighborhood and there’s no way you wouldn’t find GA Kenkey coupled with hot pepper and fried fish. It’s a favorite of the GA’s and there’s no denying that they are the best at making it. Some restaurants on Pizarea that serve GA Kenkey as a local dish include, H-Street Xpress, Everyone’s Kitchen, Kenkey House and others.
Ashanti Local dishes
Akans in general love their Fufu. Indeed Fufu with any soup either light soup, groundnut soup or Palm nut soup with an ample amount of meat would sound like heaven the ears of an Ashanti. It is also a popular local dish with other ethnic groups. On Pizarea, restaurants like Living Room, Village Bar and African Cho’Bar. They make fufu just like mama made it!
The Fante Local Dish
The Fantes are famous for their Ampesi. I’m no Fante but you could see how I described it as my favorite meal. It’s quite nutritious, complete with a combination of carbohydrates, iron and proteins. This local dish is prominent with other Akans including people from the Eastern Region and Brong Ahafo Region. Klassy Pot and Living Room are restaurants on Pizarea you can get this meal.
The Ewe Local Dish
Akple is the traditional food of the Ewes. It’s made in its own special way served with Ademe. The ewes also love Banku and Okro Stew or Soup. Banku and Okro Stew is a popular local dish with other ethnic groups in the country. It’s a very popular menu item in restaurants. Restaurants such as Hajia Apenkwa, Living Room, Everyone’s Kitchen, and Mangoase Restaurant on Pizarea serve this meal.
Northern Local Dishes 
Among the three northern regions, the most popular local dish beloved by all is Tuozaafi and Ayoyo. There’s also Tubaani served in the Upper West Region of the country. It has become a local favorite! Even in the capital Accra, more and more restaurants keep adding it to their menus. Restaurants like Hajia Apenkwa serve Tuozaafi.
Among others, people love Waakye, Jollof, Aprapransa, Acheke etc… These meals cut across the various ethnic groups. However the great thing about Ghanaians is their willingness to explore. All these meals have become household names in every home!
