I’m sure everyone has a particular local dish they can call their favorite. I know my favorite is Ampesi with some very well-seasoned Kobi. Seriously speaking even talking about it is making me drool! Like me everyone else has their favorite!

Every ethnic group in Ghana has some particular popular local dish that are generic to them. The following represent these groups.

GA Local Dishes

Visit any typical GA neighborhood and there’s no way you wouldn’t find GA Kenkey coupled with hot pepper and fried fish. It’s a favorite of the GA’s and there’s no denying that they are the best at making it. Some restaurants on Pizarea that serve GA Kenkey as a local dish include, H-Street Xpress, Everyone’s Kitchen, Kenkey House and others.

Ashanti Local dishes

Akans in general love their Fufu. Indeed Fufu with any soup either light soup, groundnut soup or Palm nut soup with an ample amount of meat would sound like heaven the ears of an Ashanti. The Fante Local Dish

The Fantes are famous for their Ampesi. I’m no Fante but you could see how I described it as my favorite meal. It’s quite nutritious, complete with a combination of carbohydrates, iron and proteins. The Ewe Local Dish

Akple is the traditional food of the Ewes. It’s made in its own special way served with Ademe. The ewes also love Banku and Okro Stew or Soup. Northern Local Dishes 

Among the three northern regions, the most popular local dish beloved by all is Tuozaafi and Ayoyo. There’s also Tubaani served in the Upper West Region of the country. Among these, tuozaafi is best taken with ayoyo sauce. Kenkey and banku may also be eaten with hot grinded red, black or green pepper sauce accompanied with meat, fish or fried egg.

Other main dishes include boiled or fried yam, rice, cassava, cocoyam and plantain (ampesi). These may be eaten with stews and sauces. Such stews include kontomire, a nutritious delicacy rumoured to possess healing properties to diseases such as anaemia; tomato stew with meat, fish or mushroom; agushie stew; assorted vegetable stew; garden egg stew; meat stew or even fante- fante, which is a fresh fish stew by the Fante tribe. One pot dishes such as the nation’s favourite jollof rice, garifortor, acherker and mpotompoto are also delicious main meals that cannot be overlooked. Another meal enjoyed by Ghanaians is boiled beans with fried ripe plantain glazed with palm oil and sprinkled with crisp sweet-scented gari, a pocket-friendly meal available in every region.

Ghanaian folks are generally known for their hospitality and friendliness.  It is easy to walk into neighbour’s house and get served with a portion of any of the above-mentioned meals.
